The 73rd Republic Day was celebrated with much fanfare and elegance at Greenlawns School, Worli. Our respected Principal, Mr. Sanjay Roy directed the teachers and the staff about the execution of various events that comprised the entire programme. Given the unpredictable circumstances, the celebration was held online on the Zoom platform. The day began with keeping the tradition of Greenlawns alive with the hoisting of the National Flag inside the school hall. The staff members returned home to connect online to the zoom platform as the exciting events started unfolding as scheduled at 8 a.m. sharp. Sir Roy has a penchant for punctuality so the students learn that strong virtue from him. All the juniors and seniors were connected online and dressed to perfection in an impeccable manner.
The show was compered effectually by the Head Girl of Greenlawns School, Worli, Grisha Jain and one of the scholars who is humourous, witty and talented, Krish Jain. Sir Roy began with a heartwarming speech as he broke the norm and spoke in Hindi. In his short and suave manner, he highlighted the key virtues needed to be a good human being. The students listened in rapt attention as he continued, the first vital trait one needs to imbibe is fostering and nurturing a deep respect for the parents. The role of a mother as she becomes the indispensable part of a child’s life suddenly takes a turn for the worse, as she is brushed aside during the teenager’s life as she is reminded that she belongs to an older generation and would not understand. This habit of taking their parents for granted must change NOW…
He further stressed the need to show reverence to the teachers, ‘the Gurus’ who guide and help the pupils every step of the way. They influence the children to work hard and accomplish their dreams. He cited the example of an ant, who relentlessly tries hard to climb up a wall and falls down only to get back to putting its effort to succeed in the end. He quoted a few lines from the famous Hindi poet laureate of India, Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s epic poem and this mesmerized the audience as we discovered that he has the gift of the gab.
The third essential quality was that of learning from our mistakes. He gave Thomas Elva Edison’s example to show that one must learn from each mistake, as Edison learnt from each of his 1000 failed attempts to make a light bulb.
The speech went down well with the audience. After this, the Hindi Oratory Competition was hosted by Ms. Vandana Mishra. It was an engrossing event as the middle school and the seniors showed their mettle. A Herculean task lay in the hands of the two judges as each candidate was as good as his opponent.
The next event was the Investiture Ceremony. The outgoing council members handed the reigns to the new captains, who were democratically elected by the pupils of the school. The Head Boy for the academic year 2022-2023 is Arnav Zagade and the Head Girl is Swaranjali Suryavanshi. The House captains and vice captains followed suit. They proudly accepted their positions and the parents did the honours, of pinning on sash and the batch. Some were dressed in their child’s House colours to show their solidarity and pride.
The entire show was executed flawlessly due to the able guidance of our Principal, Sir Sanjay Roy. We feel a deep sense of pride and privileged to be mentored by him.
